Stephen Pain - Two Poems

We could walk right through each other
We could walk right through
each other
so unworldly are you and I
we sit on a bench while a dragonfly
skips the light of
September
it's gold and blue
transparent wing like a
stained glass window
through which I can see
slips of white and blue sky

And as a penitent
I could talk far above
my words embossed on a nearby
tree, its branch charred by
last year's lightning
I know
you would leave me
to look at my landscape
disfigured by an inappropriate
trope:
like the two of us in love.

Really
Really, it needs the touch of
a Robert Creeley
those intimate
moments of
domesticity
something he hopes
would bring you to
attention
and say, Yes,
it is in
its carnate
simplicity,
the truth warm
and frank, the hearth
by which you and I
could sit and talk
I could then look
at you, and look
again, and again
infinitely.
