Susan Young - Poem
Letter to Lazarus (from Mary)
We encountered your savior last night,
at a museum show.
Between hors d'oeuvres and landscapes, we talked
about this and that, nothing special,
but time receded, I
heard our parents' wails of grief,
felt fear and rage tear at my throat,
tasted bitterness,
smelled the hospital smell,
saw that moment
when he put out his hand
and called you away
from death into life.
I managed to say "good to see you",
instead of kissing the hem of his garment.
