Neca Stoller
Yuchee Town
beyond the mound
beneath
the red clay
of south field, bone
shards shift
in the wake of earthworms;
a painted pot
fills with the slow seeping
of dawn rain,
and a man steps
from the shaded
oaks, beside
the seed-filled
fruit of wild
scuppernongs
up the field, walking
on a village
of the Yuchee,
ash covered
in the year
of 1833
and the tree
roots close
round the spirit town.
