Jeffrey Alfier

Conquistador

Suffer the undead Vision.
Paling Moors warned Córdoba:
'The Jinn are made of fire' --
they taunt with rivers of thirst.
Etched in Canyon del Muerto,
Toledo-forged rapiers
pierce the veil of Zuni blood.

Bestride the legends and sand,
horses and plows echo now
where Aztec idols toppled.
Yet the end arrives defamed.
Gold rasps through arcane silence --
invokes dusts of Spanish saints...
          'Cíbola' cries from dry lips.
