gravity eighteen, editor's desk Well, I did it. Put Gravity in frames. If you want to jump out of the frameset to view a given page, click the blue cube at the bottom of that page. This is also the thing to do if you want to link to a specific page. Taxes are due today, taxes are due today, taxes are due... Welcome to Another Big Issue of Gravity! This one is a mother, people. Whatever you do with 18, make sure you read Ruth Daigon, Jolie Simmons, Mark Hartenbach, Dave Sloan and the weirdness that is Matt Sanborn. By the way, that's Dave Sloan getting in touch with his muse in the background to the left. Photo by Paul Thatcher. I'm losing my mind today. Can you tell? Ok, two big upcoming things I need to tell you about. First is the book. At the insistence of Caron Andregg and my own ego, there is a "best of Gravity" book in the works. It will be somewhere over 100 pages, perfect bound, and will contain the best poetry from two years of the 'zine. Here's the rub - we've gotta raise money. What I need to know is this - how many of you are willing to pay $10 for a book that hasn't been published yet? I don't want your money now, just an idea of the folks from whom I can expect an advance purchase. (The book will eventually retail somewhat higher in price, so you get a break by ordering early. Email me for further details on the book itself.) If you would be interested in buying a book, email me with your name and the number of books you think you'll buy. I'll be back in touch with you as we get closer to time. We only need 170 of you to agree to buy a book, so do it! You know you wanna! Second is the contest - that's right, a paying contest. Gravity and Rainy Day Records are proud to announce the first annual "Yes, Virginia, There Is Money in Poetry" Award (better name and cool graphic to come later). We're not kidding. First prize is $200 US, second prize is $100 and third is $50. Guidelines: All submissions to the contest must include the words "contest submission" in the email subject line, and be addressed to me. These will be considered for the contest only, with runners up to be published as such, along with the winners, in the Sep- tember, 1998 issue. Deadline is August 15, 1998. No more than three poems submitted from any one poet. Poems previously published in Gravity are not eligible, but poems previously published somewhere else are. Prizes will be awarded on the basis of a poem or group of related poems, 1,000 words maximum. No prose. No entry fee. Again, winners and honorable mentions will be published in the September, 1998 issue of Gravity. Oh, and send us your snail-mail address, in case you win. And hey, if you collect vinyl, talk to Perry. He's making this possible. As long as we're on this interactive love-in, tell me what you think of the new design. It's been too long since I heard from you. J.C., 4/98 This Poetry Webring site owned by Gravity.
