Beth Littrell will receive her Juris Doctorate from the Georgia State University College of Law in May 2001. She recently began a civil rights career by accepting the Don George Fellowship to work for the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Georgia. She is currently the Project Director for The Sticks & Stones Project, a community advocacy and education project designed to lower the level of anti-gay hostility & harassment in schools. The centerpiece of The Sticks & Stones Project is a free workshop for educators. The innovative workshop, called "Making Schools Safe," features a three person panel who lead a discussion from understanding the problem to practical solutions. The panel is comprised of: an attorney who explains the foregoing law and legal liabilities in understandable terms; a former student who gives meaning to the message by relating real-life experience of life in a hostile environment; and a teacher who leads an interactive discussion about the negative consequence of ignoring anti-gay language.
